How long will it take me to get in shape?
I get this question all the time.
People are so focused on getting skinny and getting there ASAP. Trust me, I've heard it all; from doing fruit cleanses, juice fasts, injections, taking depression pills, smoking, and even starvation. People want it here and now, but they are not willing to work hard for it. We've become a community that believes that everything is owed to them for nothing. You can't achieve greatness without putting in the hard work guys!
Getting in shape takes hard work, determination, and sorry to tell you guys, but sometimes it takes a while. I know women who have gained weight over 2 to 5 years and expect the weight to come off in 2 to 5 months. Shows like The Biggest Loser, though they are inspiring, have made people think that major weight loss will always come off in a few months, but it's not always the case. Yes, you can lose weight just as fast, but it takes a lot of dedication on your part. You must eat very, very clean, and exercise every day.
It took me a year & a half to get to my goal weight: 60 pound loss. I worked out pretty much every day, sometimes 2x's a day, incorporated weights, cardio, HIIT, and speedwork into my routine and I always pushed myself. I didn't set boundaries for myself.
If you really are serious about getting in shape and getting healthy, not skinny, but healthy and fit, then read up on efficient & healthy ways to do it. Don't buy into all the fast fat loss crap that so many people try to sell. In the end it comes down to clean eating & working out. Don't starve yourself, instead eat 6x's a day, don't pop depression pills, hormone pills, injections, or even pick up an ugly habit such as smoking just to stay skinny or lose weight. Instead, wake up early, go for a jog or join a workout class at the gym, or organize your day to allow for an afternoon run/weight training session. It doesn't cost a fortune for a pair of weights that you can use at home.
Remember that getting in shape is like cleaning your house, it isn't always enjoyable, but you have to do it. You clean the house on Monday, but on Tuesday you gotta clean again b/c you've already piled up some dishes, gathered more dirty laundry, or the kids have thrown their toys all over the floor. It is the same with your body. You might have worked out on Monday, but on Tuesday you gotta do it all over again, your body needs to workout, you need to eat healthy again, you can't depend on yesterday's workout or yesterday's house cleaning for that matter. So clean your house! Get fit. Just like your house starts to look a mess after a week of no cleaning, so does your body. Try eating junk foods & not working out for a week and in a week your body will be a mess on the inside and will show on the outside. You won't have energy, you'll be cranky, maybe not in the mood for "the mood" with your hubby, and you'll have gained some weight and for sure are bloated. Just think about your body as your house and clean it.
Stay Motivated everyone, I know how hard & tough it may seem and how endless the "getting in shape" process is, but getting in shape & getting healthy is a lifelong journey, not just a lose weight fast journey. Anything that you get fast will come back just as fast, but if you change your lifestyle (NOT A DIET) then you will learn more about your body, your thoughts, and yourself.
"Extend your independence to your body. Being confident and secure as a woman isn’t only a state of mind or an attitude — it’s also manifested in how you think about, treat, and use your own body. You get to make the decisions about how you’ll work out and get fit, and the rest of the world — well, they’ll catch up eventually. Don’t worry about them — don’t even think about them when starting a workout." -Bodyrock.tv
"It’s a given that mental focus and strength is crucial to getting in shape and staying fit. Every day and every workout require mental dedication — our bodies don’t just automatically expend a ton of energy unless we really know how to force them to." -Bodyrock.tv
